The truth is, I'm having a lot of fun here. The friends I've met here are really great!

For the past few weeks, it's been lectures and more lectures. Sometimes, I just wished I had more time for myself. Then again, I really don't know why time passes so quickly here.

The weather has been bad the past few days, but today's weather is beautiful. We don't get a lot of sun here, but I think I'd be thankful if there's no wind or rain. Tuesday was the worst so far. It felt like a hurricane hit Edinburgh and decided to blow everyone away. I'm glad I didn't get blown away, seriously!

This is from the pub crawl we had in freshers' week!

This is from the paintball tournament organised by Edinburgh Malaysian Students Association (EMSA)

This is from the Hari Raya celebrations here!

And this is our self-organised tour around Edinburgh city centre!

And like every other student, we sneak chances of eating free food. And if you want more pictures, feel free to look for it in Facebook! I still miss Malaysian food and the people back in Malaysia, but the experience here is still like none other. Exams are drawing closer and most of us are getting anxious about it. So all the best to every one of us. Most of my time was spent preparing for Edinburgh. So much ran through my mind that there just wasn't enough space in my mind to think about things to blog.

The weeks before I left were well spent going out with friends. It still feels like yesterday when I last saw them. I hope I'm not likely to miss them, because then I'll have to eat my words. I said that I'm only going there for 9 months and will be back soon. Well, I hope I'm right and I really hope these 9 months last an eternity. Not that I don't want to come back to Malaysia and meet everyone back home, but that I'm having such a great time here!

The weather here is really nice! Apparently, many people have told me that it's not usually like this and that I'm very fortunate so I guess I'll just have to enjoy the best days here for now. Whoever said that it was going to be CoOOoOoLD when I land here is telling a big lie. It is cooling and really comfortable when the chilly wind blows but I hardly need my jacket. It's only single layers for me.

Walking around here is really quite an ease and Google Map made it way easier. The university central area, however is a little far from where I stay at the Pollock Halls of Residence and even T'ng Choong with his super long legs complains about the distance we walk daily. It is true though that somedays are spent walking to the university central area twice or thrice due to some events and talks. I, personally have little complains about walking. I feel like my feet are paralysed but I really love to walk! In fact, I just walked to Pleasance from Pollock Halls. So I kind of enjoyed it here!

I'm staying at Grant House and I think I'm the only Asian in the 3rd floor. The 4th floor seems to have some Asians, so be thankful, T'ng Choong. For those who knew what happened to my accommodation applications, I am really thankful I finally received a room here. The room is quite small and the bathroom is shared, but I really love it that there is T'ng Choong and Miriam upstairs and downstairs respectively. In fact, Grant House is right next to JMCC, which is the place where food is served, so I can always get to my meals fast.

The people here are nice. I've met all the Malaysians and Singaporeans reading medicine here and even some who are taking other degrees. Not to mention some Hong Kongers, who are really good company. I guess I'm getting along well! =)

For now, I've done most of the registration. All I really need to do now is open a bank account, which I'll finally have time for tomorrow. And I lost my handphone at KLIA, so to those who have been trying to call me, I'm so sorry. I really don't know how I could be so absent minded, but I promised myself to be more careful. And so, I need to get a phone number and a new phone. Trust me, I'm not too thrilled about this either.

Ceilidh is a traditional dance here and I got to learn a few of the steps last night at the International Students' Ceilidh. It was really fun and we all had a great time. Weiyang was especially excited and danced like there was no tomorrow.

Well, it's late here now. Hope to post another entry soon. Till then, cheers!

-hwg-

Visa

I haven't been updating this blog much. I'm more than willing to spend hours and hours of my time on a good online game despite knowing that all I'm getting from it is sheer pleasure. And since time is of abundance right now, you can bet I'm already busy with another online game.

My new game is called Dragonica. It's a 3D MMORPG which allows arcades style battling (something like Street Fighter, but very much less interesting). And I've finally made it to level 20 today, which allows a job change. So far, it's been quite interesting but it's starting to get on my nerves, which will somehow yank out the perseverence in me to play harder and longer hours ...

And this time, I've chosen to be a Thief, one of the toughest classes if you ask me. But as far as I can see, all the effort pays one quite lucratively with superb skills that can wipe out a whole map's worth of monsters in very little time.

So if you're free like me and a fool for online games, just like me, you might want to try it. You start to wonder if you will get anything of such and how will your peers react. Panic syndrome-esque ...

My brain is crashing down, honestly. I'm getting more and more blur, emotionless and expressionless. I'm losing my senses, seriously! And because I hardly feel anything lately, I don't remember much of it. I'll wake up the next day and hardly remember what I did the night before. If that's not bad enough, my brain isn't processing as efficiently as it used to. I never really was efficient of reliable, but it's just getting worse, which is a really terribly bad thing. Reading a book takes almost forever and whenever I finish a line or two, I'll have to read back, scrutinising every single word and thinking hard what it means or I wouldn't remember a thing about the book. It's probably an attention span problem, but whatever it is, I just hope it goes away really soon. I hope it's just some sort of holiday fever thing, I hope it's not permanent. I still get the feeling that someday, I'll forget all this, everything that I've known and lived for. So, if you find me on the streets, covered in rags, with long unkempt hair and beard, looking lost and deranged, please help me ...

Don't laugh, I'm being serious. Though until then, I hope that it's fully psychological and unbecoming. Get my point? No? Good! I don't either ...

P.S. What was I blogging about again?

-hwg-

Of Results, Life and UWA Interviews

Results are about to pop onto my monitor screen in about 5 days, 5 hours and 4 minutes (I know!) and I can't help but feel the jitters. Ignore the countdown thing. It's just really simple to do when it's already past twelve. Never has something been this big so as to determine which university I will be heading to, or for that matter, whether I will still be university hunting after this. It's scary when I think about it, but a little nudge of confidence goes a long way.

I don't know why, but I haven't been doing much lately. I hardly keep up with most my friends, especially my secondary schoolmates, neither do I hook up with my family and do something really meaningful. I guess things are taking a very VERY slow turn for the gutters right now ...

The UWA interview was quite good. I don't really know how to judge how well I did because it was a totally different format from all my previous interviews. It wasn't the usual 'Why medicine?', 'Why UWA?' or 'Why not just be a nurse?' sort of interviews. And the worst thing is that it involved the worst possible quality about me and I was only notified about it about 50 minutes before the interview. I really hope you can guess that quality, because for one, that's about all I'm allowed to burst from the bubble. I signed a form to not disclose any of the questions, so if you're a potential candidate doing some research, I'm sorry, I'm just a man of my word (or signature, for that matter) ...

-hwg-

...

It's been a long week. And quite a boring one too. Luckily, for the next few days, everything just seems to be planned out. I'm loving this holiday so much, but it might come to an abrupt end very soon. 10th August is coming really soon and if you do not know what that day is, it's when my A Level results are coming out. It's quite worrisome if you ask me. It's really the final decider between medicine and I ...

Anyway, until then, I think I'm going to enjoy as much as I can ... =)

-hwg-

Done!

I just finished my interview with University of Western Australia in IDP Subang Jaya. It's just such a relief that it's all over. The only real preparation I made was to make sure I wasn't sleepy during the interview by readjusting my sleep schedule and I failed to do that. It was weird, but I couldn't really sleep last night. That's just depressing ...

Anyway, I'm done! Civil courts operate alongside state-based syariah courts, which can try Muslims for religious offences. -- AFP

Source: straitstimes.com

It's 2 a.m. and I can't sleep. Maybe it's because of the tea I had for supper or I overstuffed my tummy with food. Anyway, I'm here to bring out my opinions about this topic I've been reading on the newspapers recently, which I think really boggles my mind.

First of all, I know that consuming alcohol is against most religions, especially in Islam. I've seen banners all around mosques telling people not to indulge in intoxicating materials such as drugs and alcohol. And I know that because it is made such, followers of such religion are obliged to obey in their religious teachings. But here's something weird, I know it doesn't sound strange when I say that some, if not, most Buddhists and Hindus I know consume alcohol freely with a small bunch going to the extent where they can't even walk straight or stand up. On the other hand, I have seen Muslims drink too! And trust me, there are a lot of them doing such things out there.

So why her? Why put the world's blame on this poor little model, who as far as I know, hasn't resided in Malaysia for that long? Is it just because she is someone of status? I don't think so, I have never heard of the likes of her. Is it because she's just pretty and that the board that sentenced her is just jealous? I don't think so. The syariah court I know is very fair and just. Whatever it is, I'm sure there will be some huge media frenzy about this sentence both at home and abroad. Apparently, this is the first time that anyone has been caned under Malaysia's Islamic law. Other countries will see us at par with radical Islamic countries what still cane women and stone them for the pettiest of issues.

Why punish her? I may not be a guru when it comes to religion, but religion is an affair between man (and woman) with his (or her) God. So if she commits a sin, it's between her and her God. So why is it that she gets sentenced and punished by humans. Are we just too eager to play God? Must be manipulate our religion just so that it's followers feel so much pain and fear? Religion, as I recall, is something that one follows willingly because he/she believes in it's teachings. So why is Islam in Malaysia a 'forced' religion? I believe that although we claim to be a secular country, we are one of the few countries where children born into Muslim families must be Muslim, where when either spouse is a Muslim, the other must convert religion and where if you are a Muslim, it is pretty impossible to renounce that religion. Don't tell me the crap about people consciously choosing love over religion and stuff like that because that's not how love works. When people are compelled to take on a religion, they lack the faith in that religion and thus end up doing religious taboos such as drinking.

I always ask myself, if religions ban drinking and drug abuse, why is smoking cigarettes allowed? Cigarettes, according to local advertisements warning people against smoking, contains over 4000 chemicals including nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide, can cause emphysema and chronic bronchitis and is the leading cause of lung cancer. Of the 4000 chemicals, many of them are bound to be drugs. Nicotine, if i remember correctly is a drug and it causes addiction. And when some smokers are just not satisfied with the huge arsenal of killer chemicals they are introducing to their lungs, they add in pot or weed. Now, that's really drugs! So why allow cigarettes? If it is such a terrible curse on mankind that God created for temptation, why is it that we increase taxes for cigarettes but not ban it altogether? Smokers cause deaths of second hand smokers and since taking the life of a living creature is a sin, why is smoking still legal? This is one of the examples of religious doubt standards that is still practised today.

So tell me, what is religion other than a way to manipulate people at will? It really aches me, but that's one of the reasons why I still don't believe entirely in religion. It argumentatively has enormous loopholes, doesn't have any proof and has so many double standard malpractices.

I apologise if I have offended anyone in publishing this post. I do not wish to cause any problems or outrages. I am just stating my personal view on the matter. I know, what a way to spend my 200th post!!

-hwg-

Another boring post about the bored ...

Does the sky just look so nice today? And as usual, I kind of regret it because it always turns out too short. It didn't seem that short when she was cutting it. I guess it must've shrunk a little after the cut. Somehow, that doesn't add up in chemistry =S

Anyway, here are some pictures ...

And yes, I shaved as well. Manchester United won 3-2 and although I wasn't that satisfied with the way they played which eventually led to the 2 goals that Malaysia XII scored, I was satisfied that Owen scored the final goal, just as I would have liked it. Apparently, I still wonder why they called the Malaysian selection Malaysia XI. It was more like Malaysia XX! Seriously, they were substituting every 5 minutes after half time so that everyone could get a chance to play and that kind of spoiled the game.

The crowd around Bukit Jalil was crazy, seriously. I was with Hiu Jian and there were tens of thousands of others in the stadium, not to mention all the lousy touts outside. The cheers and jeers were really something to behold. I'm not sure if this is the first of many to come or just something I'd do once in my lifetime, but I surely hope the next time this happens, it will be in Old Trafford, where the real action is!

Anyway, after the match, I went to Endah Parade to rehydrate. Yes, it was another few cups of Coke at the McDonalds and then I was ready to go again. Went to Melissa's to pick up to capo and wait for Weiyang to fetch me and that was it.

Apparently, there's going to be a second match between Manchester United and Malaysia XI because their tour to Indonesia was cancelled thanks to the Marriott Hotel bombings.

-hwg-

Time to get busy again ...

Time to get busy again ...

-hwg-

Is it just me, or ...

... is my life getting more and more boring?

... am I running out of things to do?

... are there very few good movies this summer?

... is the world conspiring against me?

... do I miss college?

... do I miss my friends?

... do I miss having to wake up at 6 a.m. and pretend that I'm not sleeping?

... are my blog posts getting shorter and shorter and way less interesting?

-hwg-

Vanilla Milk

I wanted to post this a few days back, but the internet connection failed me, so behold =) ...

Of all the things I know and fully or partially understand, there's just one puny little thing in this ironically bizarre world that I certain do not understand at all! Why is there vanilla flavoured milk? It cannot possibly come from the cows in our dairy farm unless they have been genetically modified to produce vanilla oils, so some high ambitious, yet unknowingly idiotic mad scientist must have added the vanilla extract into the milk in the first place! So tell me, you sad bane of the human society, does it actually taste better? Does it make the milk a thousand times more nutritious? Does it gives us human super powers or less susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases or some incurable malignant infection? Or simplest of all, does it make it lower the lactose content and make it safer for the lactose intolerant?

It happened again, today! My dad went shopping and bought me milk because I do love milk! And when I untwisted the cap, ripped off the foil cover and poured myself half a cup, I felt something bad was going to happen. Much to my expectations, as soon as I tilted the cup so that the seemingly lovely liquid mixture of milk will flow into my mouth, I tasted the most hatred taste when associated to milk: vanilla! I swear I tried my best not to swear at that moment ...

Don't get me wrong. I love milk more than I love most other types of food. And I don't mind vanilla in pastries and confectionaries, but vanilla and milk is just plain disgusting! I remember there was once a few months back when I took a gulp vanilla flavoured milk and the taste was so strong that I got a headache that didn't recover until the next day. I knew I wasn't allergic to vanilla so from that day on, I took a personal decision to boycott all vanilla flavoured milk! So evil scientist, why would you want to harm this innocent little boy who loves milk so much? If I hated that flavour so much, imagine how many million other people in this world you might teach to hate milk throught your wondrous formula ...

I don't know anyone who likes the vanilla taste in milk. I believe it's an abomination and anyone who loves it should be annihilated so as to not ensure it's survival, Darwin's style! Come on, if you just cannot learn to enjoy the original fragrant smell and taste of milk, just stop drinking it and seek your nutritions from some other less-harmful-to-people-like-me source! I know eggs are a good source of nutrition, but please don't come up with some fanciful flavour for eggs because I, too love eggs!

So to all vanilla milk lovers out there, curse you! I hope you all die in the deepest depth of hell for science is your excuse of masking the lovely smell of milk with some odd combination that's worse than baby puke ...

P.S. Sorry if I have offended anyone =)

-hwg-

2009 Wimbledon Championships: Roger Federer!

History has been rewritten! Roger Federer has just won the 2009 Wimbledon Championships after what seemed to me like the longest game of tennis ever! It was much much longer than last year's Federer-versus-Nadal stint, which already brought a lot of attention. The score, if I remember it correctly was 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14. I can't remember accurately the tiebreak score though ...

Federer's win is his 15th Grand Slam title, which puts him in front of Pete Sampras, who has 14. So he currently has the most career Grand Slams. I don't have to be a tennis fan to say that that is great ...

Roddick did play his best, but it just wasn't good enough

-hwg-

Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009)

Yes, people. It is true! The king of pop has passed away in coma about an hour after cardiac arrest. It was shocking news to me when I woke up and Weiyang broke the news to me. I didn't expect him to die, because he is quite young.

I think I'll always remember him as the young kid who sang "I'll Be There" to the world (I thought it was a girl's voice!). Late in his years, I learned to hate the image that he brought up upon himself. I don't care about the lawsuits, the child molestation cases or the comeback concerts. I just hated that he went for plastic surgery trying to look better. I loved his look in Thriller! I still think he should have maintained his look despite having vitiligo and lupus ...

-hwg-

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen

I just watched Transformer 2: Revenge of the Fallen and I think the movie was great! It was so much fun!! I never knew snorkeling could actually be so exciting. Well, to those of you who didn't go, all I can say is, your loss! I felt so tired yesterday that as soon as I popped into my bed, I fell asleep. It didn't take the usual tossing and turning and wriggling about to get me to sleep. I guess swimming against the currents, a lot of frisbee throwing and catching, a late last night followed by an early morning really gets me really tired and sleepy.

I don't really know why I'm even writing this post actually. There weren't many pictures because I didn't bring my camera because my parents were going to Istanbul and I thought of being Mr. Nice Guy and leaving the camera for them to use. So all the pictures are with my friends, and the thought of copying all those from their Facebook accounts and then uploading them into this blog is way to much work for tired me. So, to those who are my friends on Facebook, feel free to check them out. And if you're not, add me there and check them out.

The truth is, I don't feel like writing out how much fun I had (maybe because I'm too tired or something). I guess the only reason why I'm blogging now is because I felt some sort of obligation to do this ... I think I'll get the pictures on some other day =)

Anyway, Redang really was fun! I'm still a little woozy and seasick from all those nasty boat rides and snorkeling ventures, I miss the rush of the waves to the shore and the smell of the ocean and I miss getting sand in my feet ...

P.S. I miss the pina colada!

-hwg-

HEAVEN!

The last few days was really HEAVEN! =)

I'm currently enjoying the college graduates' life, just the way I want it ...

-hwg-

I'm finally done!

My A level exams were finally OVER yesterday! Yesterday was a hell lot of fun! The last paper, chemistry5, wasn't really that easy thanks to the second question, but the rest of the day was really all for my enjoyment! =)

Jonathan's party was great! The bacon explosion wasn't that bad, although the fact that we couldn't get longer bacon spoiled it. But it was really tasty nevertheless. I played twister for the first time and lost terribly. And the rest was just talking, talking and talking.

I can't believe how fast 1 and a half years has just passed me by. It felt like I just stepped into PM10 after the orientation in the Multi Purpose Hall 2 seconds ago. And I still remember my first impression of everyone (to be kept locked deep within my mind, not to be extracted). Sometime, I just wished time wouldn't pass this fast ...

Anyway, now that it's all done, I'm looking forward to enjoying the next three months with my friends!
